Drycleaning thru Wetcleaning

It has become increasingly difficult to shelter your family from unwanted contaminants entering your home. We should all take precautions to ensure the safety and well being of friends and family members. What many people don’t know is the toxic chemicals they are bringing into home in which they expose their loved ones to.

It is spring and many of us are performing a nice spring cleaning of our household items. That means getting our comforters, blankets, rugs, drapes, cushion covers, and duvets drycleaned. But is it a good idea to get all these items cleaned by using a traditional drycleaner?
Traditional drycleaning solvents are highly toxic and can have many negative effects on the human body. This is especially true when drycleaning comforters and blankets. When comforters are drycleaned, they absorb a large quantity of the solvent and it is difficult to extract all the solvent out during the drying process. More solvent is lost through cleaning comforters and blankets than through cleaning regular clothing because the comforters absorb so much solvent and require an extended drying period. Even after a long drying period, the comforters must be laid out to “air-out” to reduce the chemical smell. This does not extract all the solvent out of the comforter. It is then bagged in a plastic bag which ensures the rest of the chemicals remain in the comforter until the customer brings it home to cover their bed.

One can be sure that many customers have inhaled a strong dose of the solvent when opening the bag. It is especially adverse to one’s health by then sleeping underneath it and thereby inhaling the fumes for weeks or months.

This chemical called Perchloroethylene, commonly referred to as “perc”, is used by 85% of all drycleaners in the United States. It is highly toxic and the EPA classifies perc as a carcinogen. Just some of the adverse health effects are “neurological, liver, and kidney effects following acute (short-term) and chronic (long-term) inhalation exposure.” There are so many negative health effects of perc that it is difficult to list them all. All the information is listed on the EPA’s website.

So what is the alternative to using traditional drycleaners using “Perc” as their main cleaning agent? One could look for a drycleaner who professes to be “Green”, but what does that mean? Ask your drycleaner what solvents they use to clean your garments and household items. If they are using anything other than water or CO2 (listed by the EPA as the only 2 environmentally friendly cleaning mediums), then it is not “Green” and could adversely affect your health.

Wetcleaning is the alternative to the traditional solvent of the drycleaning industry. Wetcleaning is a process that uses only water to clean anything that says “Dryclean only”. All soaps, conditioners, and spotting agents are approved by the EPA. There is now a safe method of cleaning all garments including household items such as comforters, blankets, drapes and rugs. And what is more natural and effective than cleaning with water? Water naturally cleans 99% of all stains that garments incur. Perc, Hydrocarbon, and other solvents cannot naturally remove sweat, foods, and drinks in their cleaning process. Wetcleaning is the natural and safe method of “drycleaning” and it the method of the future.

Wet clean household items at a Green Dry cleaner!

When drycleaning household items that’s are large and bulky such as comforters, blankets and drapes, the drycleaning solvent such as perc tends to remain in the items in much larger quantities. Normally, it is bagged and then given to the customer who directly places the item on their bed or in their living room. More of the residual solvent is then released into the breathing space in your house.

Down comforters are especially prone to retaining large amounts of solvents unless dried for an extended period of time.  It is critical the drycleaner runs a prolonged dry cycle when cleaning down comforters or even down coats.   Wet cleaning solves this issue all together by only using water.  Since no toxic solvents were used in the cleaning process, there will be no concerns with exposure to any toxic substances.

It is especially hazardous when placing a recently drycleaned comforter on the bed. You are breathing in the toxic fumes as your sleep and can be very detrimental to your health.

Wetcleaning can alleviate any concerns about breathing toxic vapors. We at Spot Cleaners are the only wetcleaner in Reno. 100% Green Drycleaner is what we stand by and can eliminate health concerns you might have with other drycleaners using toxic solvents to clean your clothes.

Spot Cleaners has gone 100% Green (Wet Cleaning)!

Spot Cleaners is a drycleaners in Reno, NV that has converted to wet cleaning and has been in business for 12 years. We have been looking for a method of cleaning that is effective and conscientious of the environment for some time. We have looked into Wetcleaning in the past and decided against it because it was a relatively new process and there wasn’t much data posted on its pros and cons. We also examined other processes such as Greenearth, Hydrocarbon, CO2 and petroleum. All were viable candidates but none had the cleaning effectiveness as perc. We still wanted to produce a quality product that our customers expect.

Perc (the solvent used by 85% of all drycleaners in the US) has very good cleaning properties, but it is also toxic and produces hazardous waste. It is classified as a probable carcinogen by the EPA. California has classified Perc as a solvent known to cause cancer and has passed laws to phase out the use of Perc in its state by 2023.  Currently, there will be no new Perc drycleaning plants allowed in California.

The EPA has approved CO2 and Wetcleaning as the only 100% Environmentally friendly cleaning methods. We have come to the conclusion that using water in the wetcleaning process(the most abundant liquid on earth) is by far the superior cleaning method for both the environment and our customers.  Although considerable amount of time and money was invested in this conversion to wetcleaning, Spot Cleaners will not raise prices.

What is Wetcleaning? It has been around for 15 years and it now getting its due. The trial and error of cleaning “dryclean only” clothing has been perfected. Also the technology in the washers and dryers have had significant advancements in 15 years. Special computer controlled washers and humidity control dryers along with updated conditioners and detergents have made wetcleaning a viable option to the standard drycleaning solvents.

Spot Cleaners will be the first and only drycleaners in Reno, Sparks, Carson City and Truckee to be 100% Green.  No other drycleaners in the entire area can make that claim.  We will be the first and only wetcleaning facility in Northern Nevada thus establishing Spot Cleaners as the only 100% environmentally friendly cleaners in the area.

Wetcleaning is an environmentally sound cleaning process and produces exceptional cleaning.  The clothes come out smelling fresh and clean almost exactly like your washer at home.  All of the detergents, soaps and conditioners have been approved by the EPA to be environmentally sound to be safely flushed down the drain.  Also the spotting chemicals have been certified to be safely flushed down the drain.  There isn’t another cleaning process that can claim that.
